High Performance schools are built using an integrated design process that has long-term benefits for the community.

Six areas are considered in the design and construction process:

  • community and site planning
  • renewable energy
  • energy efficiency
  • indoor environmental quality
  • materials
  • efficient water use

Definitions and standards of High Performance or Green School standards are still evolving.  LEED certification is a common practice - these are standards developed by the Green Building Council.

There are many other aspects important to High Performance or Green schools - this includes raising awareness within a community and engaging in simple solutions like better, more useful recycling systems, turning out lights or turning off computers when not in use, car pooling and making best use of bus routes, planting gardens that grow food for use in the cafeteria and much more.

Cost effectiveness is one of the compelling reasons for communities to choose to build high performance schools.  These schools are designed to be energy, water and material efficient which can dramatically reduce operating costs.

Green School Toolbox is a place to both share current practices, learn new ideas and work together to bring significant change to help amass a "green" shift in the school community.
